Phonics PowerPoints? Phonics Slideshows? Something Else?

The world over, ‘phonics slideshows’ are referred to by many names e.g. Phonics Flashcards Presentation, Word Family PowerPoints, Phonics Slideshows, Digital Flashcards, Interactive Flashcards, Non-Prep Sound Studies… to name but a few. That said, you have stumbled across a free phonics teaching resource designed to provide easy access to powerful onset and rime practice.

Phonics PowerPoint Overview – What You Get:

  • Slide One displays the focus onset (beginning sound) ‘bl’. This gives the opportunity to discuss the initial consonant blend devoid of graphic clues.
  • The next slide shows the word ending (rime) AND a supporting child-friendly image. This gives the opportunity to discuss the visual and text-based clues as to what the focus word could be.
  • On clicking, the onset (beginning sound) will appear to create a word. This will confirm and reinforce student predictions.
  • Exploring all the words, pictures, onset and rime included in the slideshow.

Having students buddy up to answer questions
ensures effective ‘minds on’ time.

Pairs are Powerful – Think Pair Share:

  1. Ask students to pair up with someone they, ‘know they will work well with’.
  2. Have students sit side by side.
  3. Discuss the importance of ‘think time’. This is where you ask students to hold back giving their answer for a few seconds to ensure everyone has an answer in their mind.
  4. Ask a question involving prediction e.g. The final sound of this word is ‘ink’ and the word has something to do with having eyes closed. What could this word be? I’ll give you a few seconds to think.
  5. Have the students lean in and whisper the answer to their partner. When the hubbub settles, choose a pair to give the answer to the group.
  6. Click through to the next slide and repeat a variation of the process.

Possible Think Pair Share Question Variations:

  • What could this word be given it starts with ‘bl’ and the picture is of a _______
  • ‘Think to yourself (insert question). Get the answer in your head (give wait time). Whisper the answer to your partner.’
  • ‘On the count of three tell your partner what this picture is… 1,2, 3’  🙂
  • ‘Tell your partner the first sound you hear in the word (insert word)’
  • ‘Tell your partner the final/last sound you hear in the word (insert word)’
  • ‘What is the first sound you hear in the word (use the false pronunciation)* bl-bl-bl-ed?
  • ‘What other sounds can you hear in the word (insert word)? e.g. medial and final
  • ‘What is the middle sound you hear in the word (use the false pronunciation)* bl-e-e-e-d?
  • ‘What is the last sound you hear in the word (use the false pronunciation)* bl-e-d-d-d?
  • If the word is _______, what sound would you expect to fly in?
  • ‘(Student name) what letter/sound do you and your partner think will fly in here?’
  • ‘Can I have a victim (double take) I mean volunteer…’ (This ‘Dad Joke’ never gets old) hehehe
  • Ask the student to blend the sounds as you point to them with the ‘freaking laser’.
  • ‘What letter do you think might animate in?’
  • After students blend the sounds have them say the whole word
  • Ask the students to compose a ‘silly sentence’ using the word with their buddy. Call students to say their sentence to the class. (Sometimes you might need to remind them to keep the humor above the navel)
  • Tell your partner ALL the sounds you hear in the word blimp /b/…/l/…/i…/mp/

bl Wordlist:

bled, blimp, blast, blink, blob, blaze, blame, blade, bleed, bleach, blood, bliss, blank, blush, blend, blocks, black, blind, bloom & blue.

PRESS ALL the BUTTONS! esp FULL-SCREEN MODE!

The best way to work out what the buttons do at the bottom of the slideshow do is to press them. Forward? Backward? Pause? Go to Any Slide? The Freaking Laser? Full-Screen Mode? How to Get Out of Full-Screen Mode?

FYI Using Letter Names Do Not Lead to the Breaking of the Phonetic Code

When using this phonics PowerPoint presentation it is WAY more powerful to refer to the letter sounds rather than the letter name. The sound a letter (or combination of letters) gives more access to the skills required to break the code of reading. Letter names give students a language to discuss spelling but they are not useful in learning to read. In fact, teaching letter names first can lead to confusion i.e. the letters f, l & s all start with the phonemic sound short e.

As student knowledge increases begin using the sound a letter makes and the letter’s name interchangeably.
