Phonics Word Wheel

What is a Phonics Word Wheel?

A phonics word wheel is an instructional toy designed to have students manipulate and practice onset & rime.  The wheel reinforces how words are made up of common patterns e.g. the rime ab can be used to make many different words when the letters j, d, cr, c, gr, sl, sc and l are used as onset.

The colorful front cover disk masks the letters below. When the bottom disk is rotated a single letter or blend is revealed in the gap in the top wheel. Students then read the word formed.

How to Make a Word Wheel:

  1. Print out the Word Wheel you require on thicker card stock. I recommend 120gm to 200gm weight.
  2. Cut out both circles and the indent with scissors.
  3. Pierce the central dot in the letter wheel with a thumbtack.
  4. Place the words wheel on to of the cover making sure it covers perfectly.
  5. Stick the thumbtack through the hole on the top wheel and pierce a hole in the bottom wheel.
  6. Use a split pin to join the two wheels together.
  7. Spin the bottom wheel and trim off any excess wheel that pops out from under the top wheel.

Possible Uses for Word Wheels:

  • In pairs, children play spin the wheels for their partner and read the words created to each other.
  • Store word wheels in a tub – I like to group them in similar ‘families’ for ease of access and to cut down time ‘finding’ resources.
  • Pin the word wheels to felt boards so the students can interact with them during print walks.
  • Spend 5 minutes in Guided Reading Sessions using this resource as a phonics sound focus.
  • Send the word wheels home as part of a home reading program. Students pick the ones they think they need to ‘work on’. (I find 3 at a time is a good number)
  • Students make their own word wheels from the website based on their perceived needs.
  • Publish the website http://phonics-teaching.com in the school or class newsletter. Have students print out their own resources and bring them into class. Once they have learned the concept, the word wheel is placed into the class collection NB This can really save on printer ink.
  • Host a Make and Take Session – have some parent helpers come in. Put on some nibbles and set up a making space (usually the library) to have them create word wheels for the class.
